Synopsis

Above our planet hangs a hollow Stone, vast as the imagination of Man.  The inner dimensions are at odds with the outer: there are different chambers to be breached, some containing deserted cities; the furthest chamber contains the greatest mystery ever to confront the Stone's scientists ...

But the Stone is not an alien structure.  It comes from the future of our humanity.  Tombstone or milestone, the war that breaks out on earth beneath its presence seems to bear witness to its prowess as oracle ...

'Eon is a work of remarkable vision and total control.  Arthur C Clarke has his most formidable rival yet in the field of epic science fiction'

Deep Impact Hits Comet Tempel 1

Credit: NASA

Deep Impact's Fireworks
NASA's Deep Impact mission kicked off Independence Day with some celestial fireworks, about 83 million miles from Earth. The mission's impactor spacecraft hit Comet Tempel 1 just before 2 a.m. EDT as a flyby spacecraft -- and other telescopes in space and on Earth -- watched.

At top left is a photo from the impactor as it approached, taken about six minutes before impact. An close up of the comet's surface, just a minute before impact, is seen at bottom left. The flyby spacecraft captured the bright "ejecta" from the collision, right, just 16 seconds after impact.
